Depression

Depression is more than just feeling occasionally a bit sad or low.

It can be a quite intense and serious condition, that can affect you for weeks, months or years at a time.

It can vary from being mild (still disabling) to very severe, with often a loss of interest or enjoyment in usual activities.

Depression can affect how you feel about yourself and often makes life more difficult to manage from day to day.

Clients describe it as having a heavy mind and body; a sense of hopelessness and despair; being unable to make decisions and when you do, doubting that you made the right one; having a permanent self-critic in the house and zero self-esteem.

We don’t really know what causes depression, however, it is usually caused by a combination of negative events and personal factors rather than one event . Contributing personal factors may be things such as family history, drugs and alcohol, medical illness and personality type.

It is often a sign that there are unresolved issues from a person’s past, that can be dealt with through therapy.

Signs and symptoms vary from person to person and may or may not include :-

  • Changes in behaviour such as self-medicating, withdrawing from people and activities, not completing work or school, unable to focus.
